About Dr. Lee and her creator, author Roberta Burton:
Dr. Lee Lindsey, a doctoral candidate who has completed all the requirements except defending her dissertation and completing an internship, is the main character in my novel The Burgundy Briefcase. Dr. Lee has years of experience gleaned from her work as a master’s level clinical psychologist, and from working with families of alcoholics and addicts through her Al-Anon program and clinical practice.
I have my Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy from the Florida State University. As a licensed psychological associate in North Carolina, I was on the staff of a western Carolina hospital until the psychiatric unit closed. I chose to get a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy because peoples’ problems at work or in the social realm mimic the same kinds of issues they had in their families of origin. When I completed my dissertation, I realized I had the makings of a book. I sat down with my computer. For days, hours, months. The Burgundy Briefcase and Dr. Lee took over my life for a time.
I often wondered why I remained in Tallahassee after I completed my studies. I discovered that I had opportunities to pursue many interests. I am a watercolorist and have shown my work around Tallahassee, as well as galleries in North Carolina. I found a community of people with whom I could share my interest in mind-body-spirit therapy. When one system is out of balance, it affects the whole. Tallahassee has provided a community of writers who willingly give of their time to listen to a passage or encourage me when I was sure I couldn’t write and never could. Many of my struggles are reflected through Dr. Lee Lindsey and The Burgundy Briefcase.
In an age where much of our communication is electronic, where writing a novel demands intense time alone, I have found support through my writing friends and with my twelve-step group. Without these, I would not grow as a writer, as a therapist, or as a spiritual person.
Through Dr. Lee and this blog, I hope to continue this important work.
